WinPWN Beta released and tutorial

cmw has been hard at work porting PWNED from the dev team to the PC, it’s called WinPWN, more info can be found on the winpwn website, but here is the public release note:

This is winpwn-0.99.1.8BETA. I have disabled 2.0+ support since it’s still buggy. Hopefully with people beta testing i will get allthe bugs worked out within a few days and you will get a final release including 2.0+ support.

You WILL be able to flash custom ipsw’s made with mac pwnage if you wish to upgrade to 2.0 and can’t wait for final winpwn. For now i have also disabled most of the custom options including the applications (installer is still there) and the unlock base band features. Once i’m happy it’s stable i will enable those features for testing. I will post a more detailed breakdown of how it works (YES THAT IS QEMU) and why i choose to use qemu.

You will require the iTunesMobileDevice.dll and you will have to put it inside the winpwn program files dir. iBooter support has been disabled since i haven’t tested it yet. So you are stuck with iTunes for beta release. NOTE: YOU MAY NEED TO USE REGULAR RECOVERY MODE MANUALLY IF WINPWN DOESNT DO IT ITSELF.

REMINDER YOUR IPHONE/IPOD MUST BE ON 1.1.4 TO USE WINPWN AND YOU MUST LOAD 1.1.4 TO PWN OR TO BUILD A CUSTOM IPSW

New iPhone Handwriting Recognition software released

I always wondered how come the iPhone never came with a handwriting recognition software app, I thought that this would have been a no brainer for the touchscreen phone, but it seems Apple thinks differently. I guess with their roll out plan and approved carriers they didn’t see the need for it. Hanwang.com.cn has stepped in and created the worlds first iPhone handwriting recognition software called HWPen.app

With emerging markets like Japan, China and Asia, where thousands of crazy alpha numeric characters are used in everyday communication, this may be a great asset. For now input is limited to your finger (doh) but the response is good and it is pretty accurate. If you would like to test it out, please add: http://iphonecake.com/src/ to your installer sources and look under iPhone Cake category and install HWPen.app

UK Drops iPhone prices £100 till June 1st – 3G 2nd Gen iPhone Soon?

The UK carrier O2, has slashed prices by £100, dropping the price (with a two year contract) to ~£170. This comes soon after T-Mobile Germany slashed prices too.

This is a clear sign that they are clearing out the old to make way for the new. 3G is strong, abundant and in high demand in Europe, especially in the business market and with Enterprise Apps via the AppStore, Exchange Support, and 3G, ever increasing capacity, Apple is definitely positioning itself to give RIM a run for its money.

How to add custom Startup and Restore images to your iPhone with PWNED

Once again the guys over at iClarified have put together a great tutorial for loading custom images into your PWNED firmware. NOTE***: There are stringent requirements for these files. They must be 24bit PNGs, 100KB or less, have an alpha layer, RGB or Greyscale, and 320×480 or less in size.

HINT***: If you want to use a solid image as your background. Create a new transparent image in photoshop just slightly bigger then your original image. Copy your original image onto the new transparent image you just created. Make sure you can see some of the transparency layer on the sides. Then select Save for Web from the File Menu. Make sure you save it as PNG24 with transparency enabled!

Not too sure if I understand the “hint” above, but i will be trying it out today and will let you know how it goes. Check it out the great tutorial here:

PWNED 1.1 update – iPhone Unlocking Tool from the Dev Team

Greetings! The Dev’s have been working hard at it again and as promised the update is out for the new beloved PWNED that chock full of great updates and new features:

Changes and fixes:-

  • EDGE settings fix for iPhone 1.1.4 firmware
  • iPhone/iPod firmware 2.0 5A240d support

New Features

  • Added custom package support
  • Added custom logo support
  • Added auto delete of BootNeuter.app

The application can be downloaded directly from http://xs1.iphwn.org/appcast/PwnageTool_1.1.zip

I can’t wait to load up some wacky startup screen and trick out my new custom 1.1.4 firmware. The ability to remove BootNeuter after unlocking etc would help settle allot of nervous users staring at it after opening it up by mistake or something, and selecting apps to be pre-installed like iLiberty+ and iPlus is a dream

There is also the new beta firmware 2.0 support included in this update, but unless you are a developer or just willing to go through the steps to get 2.0 working correctly on any carrier, and in the event you want to revert to sanity, the patience and know how to get back to 1.1.4 safely, I wouldn’t recommend trying out 2.0 just yet.

This is for OS X only so far and the Dev’s advise that cmw is working hard to make the wondows version, and his winpwn tool is independent of the Dev Team and they can’t comment on when that will be ready, but with this update and other possibilities on the horizon, things are looking great.

More 2.0 iPhone Firmware features revealed

Seems like every week a new feature of the firmware 2.0 is unveiled, last week was the rumors of the new SGold chip and the probability of improved camera mega pixel goodness and new contact search features.

This weeks new ability (thanks to Engadget) is to save images form websites to the iPhone. This means that there must be some way to attach these saved images to emails, so maybe some kind of simple file browser will be included (wishful thinking) or probably just a simple attachment icon that will allow you to attach an image or two if we are lucky.

The other new feature isn’t so new, but is the ability to take a screen shot of the iPhones screen by holding power and touching the home button, which will make the screen flash white to let you know you took the snap, cool, and almost exactly like the app from RipDev that allows you to do the same by holding home and toggling the mute button.

These and other new features being found in 2.0 beta updates shows that apple is listening to the voice of the people, and what the people want is the functionality found in most third [arty apps. Hopefully we will see some more cool functionality added with the next beta update in May.

Naked Case for the iPhone – Protects screen with full functionality

I have been meaning to do a review of cases for the iPhone for while now, but as we get in stock, they seem to sell out quicker than I can hold onto them, which is a good thing a guess :) Recently I came across this really cool new case from Case-Mate called the Naked Case

It claims to be “the world’s first touch through case for the iPhone” (but I think I remember seeing another around recently). The Naked Case provides full protection for your screen which is really cool for people that are paranoid about scratching their screens.

There is a new space age “patent pending electrostatic membrane” on the front of th the Naked Case that mimics the way the iPhone screen works by transmitting the electrostatic pulses from your touch to the iPhone screen and still protect your screen from the bunch of keys in your pocket or handbag. The usual holes and cutouts are provided to all controls, I find it looks a big bulky, but the Contour Showcase I am using now can’t be much smaller.

PWNED part deux? is an update coming soon?

Gizmodo is reporting that an update for PWNED from the Dev Team may be coming soon via and automatic update with the much wanted custom images for startup and restore modes.

The update hopefully will also include the ability to add custom payloads like Installer, BSDSubsystem and other frequently installed apps and fixes that will save allot of time when restoring your iPhone with a PWNED firmware. IPSWTool developers are working hard to get their app out the door, but from the looks of things, the dev’s as usual may be one step ahead of the game.
